The dam is in the Cíjara National Game Reserve, and is home to a wide variety of fauna
The Cíjara reservoir was built in 1956 and has been expanding what it has to offer ever since. It is located between the provinces of Toledo and Badajoz, and is an excellent spot for taking a swim in summer and enjoying a day surrounded by magnificent Mediterranean vegetation, such as pine and eucalyptus trees. And you can also sail and fish here. The reservoir is fed by the Guadiana and Estena rivers, covering a total of 6,565 hectares of Villarta de los Montes, Helechosa de los Montes, Poblado del Cíjara, Anchuras, Bohonal de los Montes, Santa Quitera and Puerto Rey.
The reservoir is also inside the 25,000 hectare Cíjara National Game Reserve, so if you are hiking through the park you may well spot animals such as red deer, wild boar, fallow deer, eagles, partridges, lynx and black stork.
